  • In Britain of Stamps, artist Rob Hallifax explores the provenance of stamps, inspired by his childhood travels and a shared pastime with his father.

Originally created by attaching stamps to canvas, this print is reproduced beautifully at life size, giclée printed on archival paper using pigment inks.

Each stamp is really a little piece of art in itself - remarkable when you think about those created before the age of digital printing. For Britain of Stamps, Rob wanted to display his stamp collection in all its glory, making the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

The stamps featured in this piece are all ‘used’, so each has its own story. Although we'll never know the history behind them, we can see glimpses of their journeys and can imagine where they've been. Each one is a snapshot of a time and place, evidenced by the visible fragments of postmarks seen throughout this work.

Britain of Stamps is available in a limited edition of 100 prints. Each print is numbered by hand at the lower right and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

About the artist

As a boy, Rob Hallifax lived in various African countries and became fascinated by stamps. As well as picking them up from places he visited, he also enjoying collecting them from all over the world.

His father was also a philatelist and, more serious about his hobby, he only collected George VI stamps from Commonwealth countries. Together, father and son spent many hours together discussing the exact colour of stamps, or counting the number of perforations – an attribute which can have great bearing on the value of a particular stamp.

This childhood fascination persuaded Rob that the criteria by which one collects stamps are often arbitrary. Traditionally, stamps are collected by country, era, or perhaps by the types of images depicted on them. Rob’s method of gathering stamps for this piece was based on their provenance and colour, as well as how they would come together to form a geography of Britain. The stamps of Britain become Britain of Stamps.
