  • In Britain of Stamps, artist Rob Hallifax explores the provenance of stamps, inspired by his childhood travels and a shared pastime with his father.

Originally created by attaching stamps to canvas, this print is reproduced beautifully at life size, giclée printed on archival paper using pigment inks.

Each stamp is really a little piece of art in itself - remarkable when you think about those created before the age of digital printing. For Britain of Stamps, Rob wanted to display his stamp collection in all its glory, making the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

The stamps featured in this piece are all ‘used’, so each has its own story. Although we'll never know the history behind them, we can see glimpses of their journeys and can imagine where they've been. Each one is a snapshot of a time and place, evidenced by the visible fragments of postmarks seen throughout this work.

Britain of Stamps is available in a limited edition of 100 prints. Each print is numbered by hand at the lower right and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

    Giclée print with pigment inks.

Width: 329mm (13"). Height: 457mm (18"). These measurements include an unprinted margin of approximately 18mm (0.7") around all sides of the printed area. Paper is cut by hand, so some small variance should be expected. The print will fit a standard 13" x 18" frame.

    Substrate

Britain of Stamps is printed on 100% cotton, 308gsm Hahnemühle PhotoRag paper. This is heavy, white, archival paper.

Our framing service for the limited edition Britain of Stamps print presents the poster beautifully. The same craftsmanship that went into making this print goes into the framing process. Prints are framed professionally, to order, by a Guild Commended Framer using archival-quality materials and usually ship within 7 working days.

The frame is made from hardwood and has a smooth white finish and an inner bezel. Frames are sealed on the back to prevent dust from entering. D-ring attachments and hanging cord are also fitted, so the print will arrive ready to hang. A certificate of authenticity signed by the artist is also attached to the rear of the framed print.

High-quality acrylic is used in place of glass for all shipped orders. It is visibly identical, but should not be cleaned or polished with abrasives.

We package framed prints carefully to protect them from damage during shipping. Framed prints are shipped via Parcelforce.

The overall dimensions of the frame are: Width = 365mm, Height = 493mm, Depth = 23mm. The white wooden frame itself is 23mm wide all around.

  • We take great care with packaging to help ensure that your print reaches you in excellent condition. Prints are wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and shipped in large-diameter, thick-walled tubes with secured end caps.

We ship worldwide, and regularly send orders to the US, Canada and Australia. Depending on the destination, orders for multiple prints may arrive in multiple packages.

UK orders are usually delivered within two working days after dispatch. International orders are normally delivered within 5–10 working days after dispatch.

Customers in the EU may have to pay a small amount of import duty to receive packages sent from the UK.

About the artist

As a boy, Rob Hallifax lived in various African countries and became fascinated by stamps. As well as picking them up from places he visited, he also enjoyed collecting them from all over the world.

His father was also a philatelist and, more serious about his hobby, he only collected George VI stamps from Commonwealth countries. Together, father and son spent many hours together discussing the exact colour of stamps, or counting the number of perforations – an attribute which can have great bearing on the value of a particular stamp.

This childhood fascination persuaded Rob that the criteria by which one collects stamps are often arbitrary. Traditionally, stamps are collected by country, era, or perhaps by the types of images depicted on them. Rob’s method of gathering stamps for this piece was based on their provenance and colour, as well as how they would come together to form a geography of Britain. The stamps of Britain become Britain of Stamps.

Britain of Stamps

A museum-quality print

Britain of Stamps is rendered in beautiful, detailed colour following a painstaking process of digitising the original artwork, then retouching each stamp individually.

The result is a convincing reproduction of the original – everyone who has seen it in our studio has reached out to touch what they believed were actual stamps! Furthermore, the pigment inks used in printing and the 100% cotton, archival Hahnemühle substrate means that the colours will stay bright.

Each print is individually numbered by hand, in pencil at the lower right in the form #/100 and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Unframed prints from this edition are shipped flat in bend-proof packaging.

Framed prints (see image at the top of this page) use archival materials and, like their unframed counterparts, can be shipped internationally.
