Harry Houdini, born in 1874, became a legendary figure in magic and escapology, astounding audiences with his daring escapes from handcuffs, straitjackets, and locked boxes. His acts often drew massive crowds, especially during outdoor stunts where he escaped from bridges or submerged crates.
On Friday 20 February 1914 he performed at the Empire Theatre in Leeds in an 'All-Star Matinee.'
