54 years ago, John Lennon stumbled upon an antiques shop in Sevenoaks, Kent, during the filming of the Strawberry Fields Forever music video. As he browsed, an old circus poster caught his attention, sparking inspiration for his music. Inspired by the poster, Lennon wrote Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! The Penny Black was issued in Great Britain on the 1st of May, 1840 – 184 years ago today! The stamp featured a portrait of Queen Victoria, and was designed by Sir Rowland Hill, who is often credited as the inventor of the modern postage stamp.
