It was 52 years ago today...
On this day 52 years ago, John Lennon found himself strolling into an antique shop in Sevenoaks, Kent, as he filmed the promotional video for Strawberry Fields Forever. As he perused the shop, his attention was caught by an old circus poster displaying events from long ago. This then inspired Lennon to write Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! This chance encounter would go down in history as one of many instances of Lennon's ability to turn seemingly insignificant inspirations into hit songs. In fact, Sgt. The Penny Black was issued in Great Britain on the 1st of May, 1840 – 184 years ago today! The stamp featured a portrait of Queen Victoria, and was designed by Sir Rowland Hill, who is often credited as the inventor of the modern postage stamp.
